This paper deals with a fundamental research of a new container transport system driven by permanent magnet (PM) excited linear synchronous motor (LSM), and proposes a concept of mass-reduction and propulsion control for heavier goods transfer operation. By controlling the repulsive lift force in PM LSM, a large percent of vehicle weight and its load is compensated for, while it only needs less thrust force to propel the vehicle. The repulsive lift force and the propulsion force can be controlled respectively according to the decoupled control law for LM. Therefore, a combined mass-reduction and propulsion control of the vehicle is realized even in standstill state. An experiment of propelling the test vehicle with reducing its weight by about 85% has been conducted successfully.
