Abstract

This article is to examine the power structure of the Simazu 島津 as a Shugo 守護 daimyô 大名 and a daimyô in the warring age through the chief aspects of retainers' group organization and Chigyô 知行 system. As the change of the Shimazu's power structure, reflecting the gradual change of Zaichi 在地 structure, took place in instalments, it is difficult to decide upon the epoch. Its minute examination, however, reveals that a considerable change was observed between the fourteenth and the sixteenth century. From the view point of the aspect of retainers' group organization, there proceeded the officialization of neighbouring resident landlords in the fourteenth century; and accordingly Rôjû 老中 system as a governing structure came to be equipped. In the Chigyô system too, the transition was found from the type of Ando 安堵 and Azukarioki 預置き into the common type in which it was delivered as a beneficence; the object of Chigyô was changed from Shiki 職 to Shitaji 下地. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the jitô 地頭-Shûchû 衆中 system was formed, and influencial peasants were put into officialdom. Therefore, the Chigyô system was systematized, as in the establishment of consolidated army service exaction on the basis of dimensions in the sixth year of Temmon 天文, in this epoch of which the change of the Shimazu into a daimyô in the warring period was performed.
