Description

In studying the international relation between Korea and Japan in the 5th century, its comparison with other countries enfeoffed by the Chinese Southern Dynasty will cause more abundant resources to study and enable us to observe it on wider standpoint. This article tries to answer the following problems from this point. At first, we are looking for the then international position of Japan judging from the title 'Shogun' 将軍, next considering the importance of the title 'King' enfeoffed by the Chinese Dynasty, and then the problem that the Kings of Japan and Paekche 百済 wished to have the Dynasty authorize the office and title which they had temporally granted to their men, in relation to the "Sŭng-chih-chia-Shou" 「承制仮授」 by Pei-wei 北魏. In the end, of the titles which the Southern Dynasty in China had granted to the kings of the neighbouring countries military ("Tu-tu Paekche chu-chün-shid 「都督百済諸軍事」) and administrative powers ("Tz'ŭ-shih" 「刺史」) shall be especially contemplated. As a result of our study, the fact the Southern Dynasty in China had not granted "Tu-tu Paekche chu-chün-shih" to the King of Japan was not evidently due to the passive reason why the Dynasty had granted it to the King of Paekche, which causes our observation on the very active attitude of the Dynasty's politics.
