Description

In the history of Mongolian Lamaism, two Oyirad priests, Neyiči toyin (1587 ?-1653) and Jaya pandita Namqayijamču (1599-1662) were great preachers of Dge lugs pa sect Lamism. The former who had come from Turgud, after his ascentic exercises in Tibet, lived in Köke qota and preached Lamaism mainly among the Inner Monglians. His reputation was so high as to be known to Shun Ch'ih Ti 順治帝 of Ching dynasty. Neyiči toyin was briefly reffered to by Hor chos hbyun which was based on a biography of Neyiči toyin, "Bojda neyiči toyin dalai manjušrii-yin domoj". In this article, I would like to trace his preaching activities more minutely. On the other hand, there exists a biography of Jaya pandita, "Rabjamba Zaya pandhidiyin sarayin gerel kemēkü tüüji". According to this, Jaya pandita who had come from Qošūd, after returning from Tibet, lived in Oyirad, preached Lamaism among the Qalqa Mongols and the people of Oyirad. It was charcteristic of him that he was conspicious in the secular activities. The fact that he arbitrated in the Oyirad rebellion immediately after the enthronement of Sengge was a remarkable example of that. On investigating Mongolian society in the first half of the 17th century, the biographies of these two Lamaism priests provide us with many various precious materials.
