Abstract

The armed uprising which broke out in Rasht, the main town of the province of Gīlān, in February, 1909, has high reputation in the history of the Iranian Constitutional Revolution, because it was one of the main factors in putting an end to the period of "Lesser Tyrany " brought about by the coup d'état of Mohammad 'Alī Shāh and reestablishing the constitutional régime. However, it has not been fully and totally investigated as yet, except for some mention of it as a part of the process of the Revolution. So this article chiefly discusses the uprising of Rasht and the march to Tehrān following it, by analizing the anjomans which tended to have a character of the autonomous organizations of the inhabitants and the mojāhedīn which played the decisive part in the uprising and the march, both the anjomans and the mojāhedīn observed common to the uprising of Tabrīz. And I would try firstly to compare the "official" anjomans before and after the uprising, secondly to grasp the realities of the up-rising by examination of the mojāhedīn as the "Social Democratic" groups and the support forces from Transcaucasus, and thirdly to consider the meanings of the march to Tehrān.
