Description

The original version of the Shiben 世本 has been lost. The text we see today was compiled in the Qing Dynasty. Nevertheless, it is regarded as an essential historical source for the study of pre-Qin history. The content of the current text is still regarded as representing part of the original book. Comprehensive research on the form of the passages prior to the editing process during the Qing Dynasty and the character of the present text have not been conducted. In this article, I have returned to the ancient written sources that quote passages from the Shiben, examined the composition of the original sentences, and thereby showed the possibility of a new direction in the study of the Shiben. The historical background of the Shiben as it appears in the literature was examined from the standpoint of academic history. The records of the Shiben were collected from the viewpoint of the history of science, and the existence of the characteristics in the way of recognition and reception of the book within the field of academic history was confirmed. I have clarified the characteristics of the Shiben as an interpretation and interpretative source. In addition, I point out that Ying Shao's use of the Shiben in his annotations of the Hanshu exerted a great influence on the reception of the Shiben, and the reception of the Shiben is closely related to the development of the hermeneutics of the Hanshu.
