Description

During the first part of the thirteenth century China was in a chaotic situation arising from the social dislocation caused by the contending dynasties. But in 1234 the Yüan displaced the Chin Dynasty and the Mongolians ruled the people of China. The racial prejudice, however, was strong among the people and the ruling class was open to many resistances. Moreover Nan-Sung was anxious to recover territory lost in the social turmoil in the preceding ages. In such a circumstance the so-called shih-hou played a delicate role as an intermediary between the Mongolian Court and the people.
