Abstract

The "Humoto" (麓) settlements, local settlements in old Simazu (島津) territory, have been thought to be of Kamakura (鎌倉) or of late-Muromachi (室町) origin; but these settlements have been so emphasized as military settlement of the Middle Ages that many students of this problem failed to see the modern character of the settlements. Though depending on mountain forts in the Middle Ages, functionally were the Humoto settlements constituted as administrative ones in early modern times, as exemplified in their construction as settlements, their institutions, and their development into local core-settlements as the foundation of villages in the Meiji (明治) era.
