Abstract

In spite of some contrary opinions, there is a generally accepted opinion that Amaribe 余戸 means Ri 里 of ten families, according to the Koryôirijô 戸令為里条. Izumofudoki 出雲風土記 or other sources, however, denoted that Amaribe 余戸 was neither Gô 郷 Ri 里 of Ryôjô 令条 nor Kozato 里, but a village without usual Gôri 郷里. Researching villages of this character, we understand that Amaribe 余戸 means 'Jun Riko-Shûdan' 凖里戸集団 or a group of semi-Riko 里戸, according to the explanation of Shûgekoki 集解古記 on Koryôirijô 戸令為里条. Also in the geographical condition Amaribe situated only in sheer valleys, or in remote regions probably untrodden by men.
