Description

The conjunction as is known to be a polysemous item which has various kinds of usage such as manner, time, and reason. The main approach generally taken has been to discover the nature of as that is common to (or generalizes over) every usage of this word, and therefore little attention has been paid to the specific properties of each usage (i.e. subtle, but semantically/pragmatically important information for use). This paper, therefore, attempts a first rough sketch of what is needed to be able to use as properly in terms of language users’ perspective. Adopting usage-based model (cf. Langacker (1988, 1999)), which can explain how we learn to use words effectively, we can say lower-level schemas (possibly, ones near the lowest-level schemas) respectively constitute detailed information of each usage which enables us to use it effectively. In particular, they provide not only detailed characteristics of each usage, but also imply its restrictions on use. This sketch will give a descriptive foundation for the future study.
