Description

"Gion Matsuri" , the historical drama film, 23 November 1968, Japan, created the new historical image that the Gion Matsuri festival was a symbol of the victory of the people against Muromachi shogunate in the 16 century. Ito Daisuke, the movie director, thought the new idea to separate the Gion-E and the Gion-Matsuri. The Gion-E is the older name of the Gion Matsuri, used in the medieval documents. The Gion-E has been constructed by two festivals, one is the Shinto ritual with Mikoshi, portable shrines, to exorcise the all city of Kyoto, another one is the Yamahoko Junko with the people in Simogyo, a part of Kyoto. In this film, Ito Daisuke named the Yamahoko Junko to the Gion Matsuri, to explain the power of selfgovernment of the people in Kyoto, the medieval ages. Therefore, now we think the Gion Matsuri is equal to the Yamahoko Junko. I clarified the process that Ito Daisuke has created this idea, with his original documents and scripts. To this research, I used the scenario, scripts, seating arrangement, film making diary and images as a kind of historical documents, nomally used in film studies, So I made it clear that a good relationship is needed between the historical drama film and the historical research.
