Abstract

The Environment and Heritage Design Course of the School of Design, a new course started in April 2008, aims to train its students to have design capabilities that evaluate, preserve, and create the values of natural and cultural resources inherent to the local community. Therefore, it offers an integrated educational program including three main field projects in which students acquire hand-on experience in the context of real lives. One of the three, the contents and evaluation of Environment-Heritage Project I is reported here. This project class was conducted in Kasahara area in the town of Kuroki, Fukuoka Prefecture. The purpose of this report is to present the contents of the project class, and to discuss the ways in which such a University-driven project to serve social purposes and to communicate such a purpose to students.
