Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of peace in Hiroshima by using “Peace Declaration” of mayors of the Hiroshima City. For this purpose, first, we discuss the meaning components of peace concept in the three dimensions: the substance or value dimension; the promoting factor dimension; and locus dimension. The result show: (1) The meaning components of concept of peace in the substance or value dimension can come down to the three concepts; “absence of nuclear weapons,” “absence of war,” and “relief for the Atomic Bomb Victims.” (2) One specified meaning component in promoting factor dimension corresponds to one specified meaning components in the substance or value dimension. For example, “treaty” and “nuclear states” correspond to “absence of nuclear weapons,” that is, “absence of nuclear weapons” should be promoted by “nuclear states” and “treaty” which denies the existence of nuclear weapons. (3) Concept of peace can be divided into two aspects; unchangeable and changeable meaning component groups. (4) Unchangeable peace concept is the absence of war in the world and in the next generations. (5) One of the remarkable characteristics of changeable peace concepts are the promoting factor dimension became smaller unit such as “cities” from “international society” or “nations.” (6)The concept of peace in Hiroshima is based on the peace concept of Atomic Bomb Survivors.
