Abstract

This paper examines the roles of moral motivation in economic resource allocations. It focuses on the two alternative models of moral motivation which get an idea from Kant's categorical imperative, i.e., a model of Kantian behavior and a model of Kantian social ethos. Given such settings, the paper analyzes the tragedy of the commons, the incentive problem of egalitarian distribution in cooperative production, and the free-riding problem in public goods provision. It then concludes that these problems can be improved or even solved due to the existence of Kantian-type of moral motivation in a society.
