The September 11 attacks have temporarily drawn world-wide attention to Islam. The fact is, however, that there is still much misunderstanding of Islam and little sincere concern about it. This article presents the case of one Iranian Muslim philosopher's critique of Christianity and Christian society in the West, which has brought about materialism and atheism in the modern Western world. Motahhari's concern, to be sure, is not merely criticism of Christianity, but of the Western(Christian) way of speculation in general, that is, dividing the world into two clear-cut spheres, known and unknown, or scientific and mystical, which in his view has materialized in the final triumph of materialism(atheism) over theism.
