Abstract

In this paper, I picked up 191 comic strips published in main newspapers in Tokyo from 1900 to 1945, discussing the transformation of their style. In conclusion, I find out that the year 1923, when Kanto earthquake happened, is a major turning point, and in 1930s it was finally shaped into today's style. In this process, the development of children's culture and the comic strips' style in the western countries exerted a lot of influence.
