Abstract

In previous studies, the problem of the Lord's Table in First Corinthians, Chapter 11 has interested scholars in investigating the Eucharist and the Elements, or Christ's existence in the Eucharist from the religious and theological point of view. On the other hand, scholars have not paid full attention to the relation between the Lord's Table and sickness and death, to which Paul is clearly referring. This article tries to shed light on this relation in view of the culture of the symposium and feasting that was an integral part of the Greco-Roman world. From recent studies, it has turned out that the problem of the Lord's Table was not something unique to the church, but arose from a traditional, cultural institution, namely, the Greco-Roman dinner party. This article argues that gluttony was an important factor in the problem and that poison was possibly put secretly into food or wine at the Lord's Table. This hypothesis is reasonable when we take into account the culture of the symposium and the enjoyment of this culture by Corinthian Christians.
