Abstract
The Book of Jeremiah 34:8-17 speaks of the manumission of slaves and then its discontinuation by King Zedekiah. In interpreting this passage, there are two problems: One is the relationship between the "covenant" in this text and the three regulations on the manumission of slaves (Exodus 21:2-11, Leviticus 25:39-55, and Deuteronomy 15:12-18); the other problem is the use of two different Hebrew words, חָפְשִׁי and דְּרוֹר, to express the manumission of slaves. In this article, I agree with Gregory C. Chirichigno's opinion on the relationship with the three regulations, and assume there is a difference in meaning between חָפְשִׁי and דְּרוֹר. I suggest the possibility that חָפְשִׁי indicates a permanent manumission while דְּרוֹר indicates a temporary manumission.
