The purpose of this paper is to explore the political activities of Bologna's municipal government, and its relations with the central power of the Roman Curia in the Papal States in the sixteenth century, as an attempt of a comparative study with the case of Rome on which I have concentrated my attention before. For this purpose, I consulted the records of meetings of the "Senate," the most important office in Bologna's city government, which co-governed the city with the papal delegates. ......
