Description
Although urban redevelopment projects utilizing culture have been prevailing all over the world, the effects of the projects are quite controversial. Some scholars say that cultural facilities, such as museums and sports stadiums, contribute to regenerate urban economies and then improve residents' everyday lives. On the other hand, others argue that such culturally promoted urban redevelopments only lead to urban spatial inequalities: rises in rent and the eviction of low income people. I have been focusing on these current situations between city and culture, especially on a case study of the artist-led gentrification of SoHo in New York City between the 1950s and 1970s. Not only in Europe and North America, but also in Western Asia, countries have experienced the gentrification caused by the agglomeration of artists. ......
