In the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg people use Luxembourgish, German and French, and there exists a Triglossia. Originally French is used mainly in public, whereas in contrast Luxembourgish and German are used in private. However, according to some recent studies, French is used also when communicating with foreigners in everyday life. Foreign residents constitute 43.8% of the whole population. In addition, workers from the neighboring countries make up 30% of residents in Luxembourg. The total of these two types of guest workers is bigger than the number of Luxembourgers and the majority of the foreigners come from the Romanic languages area. Under these circumstances Luxembourgers are ready to speak the language of the partner, in order to avoid complex communication, so that French is used overwhelmingly in proportion to the increasing number of francophones. Today French is used as a lingua franca because there are a lot of francophones. ......
