Description

The purpose of this article is to clarify the meaning and connotation of the proverb “a sound mind in a sound body” back in Juvenal's Satire X by way of its grammar and context. The proverb is interpreted to say that a sound mind dwells in a sound body in Japanese. It can be interpreted alike in English, too. But when I seek its meaning back in Juvenal's Satire X in Latin, I have found out that the proverb says that it should be prayed that a sound mind may dwell in a sound body. Juvenal tells us not to be ambitious and to live modestly just praying that a sound mind may dwell in a sound body.
