Description

Both the number of elderly persons who live alone and the number of families of elderly couples are increasing in this aging society of Japan. Poor elderly persons who receive welfare benefits are increasing, as are the number of homeless individuals. This has become a serious social problem, for the situations are apt to be causes of self-neglect. In this country the word "self neglect” has not been defined yet, though. So I looked for a definition, causes, and signals of self-neglect from research papers abroad. Then using statistics I represented social problems, such as crimes, disasters, suicides, and murders by persons who look after the elderly. They are the problems elderly persons who live alone and families of elderly couple can experience. Next I suggested how to confront these problems of self-neglect of elderly persons personally and socially.
