Description
The adversative constructions "P-ga, Q. " form opposed relations between P or R inferred from P and Q or R inferred from Q. These constructions have overt or covert frames of opposition and are classified either as "a contrast type" such as daidokoro-wa hiroi-ga, syosaiwa semai. (The kitchen is large, but the study is small.) or "an inference and assumption type" such as haru-ni natta-ga, mada samukatta(Spring came, but was still cold.). The latter type forms an opposing relationship between the matter that is inferred and assumed from the protasis and the matter in the apodosis. "P-nimokakawarazu, Q. " constructions, however, have limited usage. Contrastive wa functions indicate the frames of opposition or the position of the opposition, and the contrastive koso ranks the protasis as minor compared to the apodosis. Since it has a strong feature that it presumes or expects R from P, nimokakawarazu rarely cooccurs with a contrastive wa, and does not co-occur with the contrastive koso.
