Wataru Masuda is an outstanding scholar of Chinese literature. He is known as a pioneer, who investigated the works of Lun Xun-a writer and a thinker of Modern China. Masuda gained fame for his paraphrased translations of the writings of Lun Xun and other Chinese novelists. Following an introduction arranged by Haruo Satou, an old friend of Lun Xun, Masuda went to Shanghai in 1931. He visited Neishan Bookstore every time, Lun Xun was there. From the very start his intention was to translate. He started asking questions about Lun Xun's Zhongguoxiaoshuoshilue. His most cherished collection of Lun Xun's books includes 'Nahan', 'Phanghuang' and last but not least 'Zhongguoxiaoshuoshilue'. These were used as textbooks during his private lessons with Lun Xun. During the course of his lessons Masuda kept diligent notes of what he was learning. He completed the study of 'Nahan' and 'Phanghuang' in just one year. As a student Masuda could have well communicated with other researchers, but he chose to communicate directly with the master, therefore it is without any doubt that this experience is vastly superior compared to other researchers of Lun Xun's works. In my opinion Masuda's notes provide a great insight for any future research translators of Chinese literature. This essay presents the transcript of Masuda's notes and evaluates the invaluable effect of Masuda's translations.
