IAP like proteins (ILPs) are newly found paralogs of inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) from wide variety of eukaryotesincluding fission yeast, mammals and higher plants. Because a human ILP (HsILP1) function as a cell death inhibitor inseveral human cells likes IAPs, there is a possibility that plant ILPs also have the same function. To assess the possibility,we tested plant ILP function using an established cell death assay systems with tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum ) cultured cells,BY-2. We isolated two ILP homolog genes, referred to as Nicotiana tabacum IAP like protein 1 (NtILP1 ) and NtILP2 , fromtobacco BY-2 cells, then produced transformed BY-2 cell lines which are overexpressed or suppressed NtILP1 . A BY-2 cell lineoverexpressed NtILP1 (NtILP1OX1) showed the decrease in cell death induced by a proteinaceous fungal elicitor, cryptogein,whereas acceleration of cell death was observed in another BY-2 cell line which is suppressed NtILP1 expression (NtILP1RNAi3).The expression of NtILP1 in elicitor-applied tobacco BY-2 cells strongly suggested NtILP1 acts as a cell death inhibitor.
