Description

On October 4, 1738, 600–700 peasants gathered to protest. The Kariya domain immediately moved toward calming the situation, accepting the requests of the peasants and disbanding the turmoil. This is the outline of the rebellion at Kariya Domain occurred in 1738. The financial poverty of the Kariya domain was severe, and as one of the measures to overcome it, the Domain introduced the new method of how to increase the annual tribute, and the people protested against it. The clan’s policy was immediately withdrawn. In this paper, we will reorganize the attempt by the Kariya domain to introduce the new method, which was the direct premise of the rebellion at Kariya Domain occurred in 1738, and the response of the peasants to it.
