1863年10月に「統一ルールの制定」を目的として歴史上初のThe Football Association(サッカー協会)が発足したことは,イングランドが近代フットボール発祥の地と呼ばれる所以である。その後の世界のサッカー普及・隆盛に多大な影響を及ぼすことになるのが1888年のFootball Leagueの設立である。しかし,我が国において,イングランドにおけるFootball Leagueの設立経緯や当時の状況について詳しく取り上げた資料はほとんど見当たらない。本研究は,1800年代後半の有力週刊スポーツ紙Athletic Newsがイングランドのフットボール界での革命的な出来事であった1888年のFootball Leagueの設立や実施に関して行った報道の実態を明らかにする史的研究である。Athletic News紙の記事分析の対象期間をFootball Leagueの考案者であるWilliam McGregorが有力な5クラブに対してその構想を手紙にして送ったとする1888年3月2日直後の発刊からFootball Leagueの優勝,準優勝までが決定した直後の発刊まで,すなわち1888年3月6日から1889年1月28日までに設定し,Athletic Newsの一面記事の内容分析を中心として研究を進めた。

The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual situation of the press about establishment and implementation of the Football League in England through the Football League News on the first page of “Athletic News"in 1888. The finding and discussions on the following topics are presented in this paper: 1. An outline of“Athletic News" 2. A percentage of occupation among difference of sports on the first page of“Athletic News"in 1888. 3. The Football League News on the first page of“Athletic News" 4. The news about“the Football Combination"(the another football league)
