In this article, the author proposes a design for a textbook chapter/supplementary handout that could be used with nutrition majors for tertiary-level firstyear required introductory Englishconversation courses in Japan. To create the design, the author drew on the “Active Learning” pedagogical methodology, the ESP literature, and the relevant SLA literature regarding how best to facilitate the learning of lower-proficiency learners. The resulting design includes major-specific communication tasks, listening and reading tasks, a group problem-solving task, journal writing, and learner self-reflection.
