This paper examines the distribution and consumption of tiger fur in Ancient and Medieval Japan. The contents of this study are as follows: Firstly, the roots and value of tiger fur is analyzed. Secondly, the distribution and consumption of tiger fur in Ancient and early Medieval Japan is analyzed. Thirdly, the distribution and consumption of tiger fur in ate Medieval Japan is analyzed. Finally, the distribution and consumption of tiger fur in early Modern Japan is analyzed. The results of this study are as follows: 1) In Ancient and Medieval Japan tiger fur was imported from Asia. Though very expensive, it was available to buy. 2) In Ancient Japan tiger fur was imported from "Bokkai" and its use was restricted to certain ranks. In early Medieval Japan,tiger fur was imported from Korea and its use was extended to further ranks. 3) In late Medieval Japan tiger fur was also imported from Korea. Japanese traders asked for many tiger furs from the King of Korea, and imported tiger fur was used as gifts by "Sengoku daimyo". Oda Nobunaga in particular liked it and possessed many furs. Nobunaga assumed distribution of tiger fur and used it as gifts for other "Sengoku daimyo". 4) In the early Medieval period Japanese people got the chance to hunt tigers in Korea and obtain the fur. 5) In Ancient and Medieval Japan tiger fur had a fixed status as a nonessential grocery.
