Significance of Nature-Based Experiential Activities in Environmental Education to the Undergraduate Student

環境教育の必要性が叫ばれているものの,大学生を対象とした環境教育の成果については研究報告としてまとめられることは少なかった.本研究は,大学生にとって自然体験実習が環境教育としてどのような価値をもつかを明らかにすることを目的とした.自然体験活動に参加した大学生･社会人,同じ体験活動の過去の参加者,人文系の大学生対してアンケート調査をおこない,環境意識の程度と環境意識の経時的な変化について調べた.環境教育を受けた際の問題点をたずねたところ,自然体験活動参加者も人文系の大学生も,実習がなかったことを問題視する回答が最も多かった.行動面では,自然体験活動参加学生の直後の回答は｢関連あるニュースに注意を払う｣が多かった.この傾向は, 1年を経過しても継続して見られた.精神面での変化については,自然体験活動参加直後は｢我慢強くなった｣,｢やればできるという自信がついた｣というポジティブに自分を評価する回答が多かったものの,1年以上が経過するとその意識は薄れてしまっていた.これらの結果をもとに,環境意識を高めるうえで,大学の教育実践のなかで自然体験実習をどのように位置づけ,取り入れていくのかという点について検討した.@@@Although the necessity of environmental education has been demanded, there are few reports about the results of environmental education to undergraduate students. A purpose of this study was to clarify the value of naturebased experiential activities in environmental education to undergraduate students. We performed questionary surveys on the undergraduate and graduate students who participated in on experiential activity in Yakushima Island (A), past participants of the activity (B), and undergraduate students of humanities majors (C). We investigated the level of environmental awareness and their changes over time. To the question 'What was a biggest problem when you took part in environmental education?', most of the respordents in both (A) and (B) chose the answer, 'There was no experiential activity', from among several choices. To the questions about their behavior, theimmediate comment of most (A) after the experiential activity was 'Pay attention to the related news'. Also (B) showed the same result. This tendency was continued more over one year. On the other hand, to the questions about mental aspects, (A) evaluated themselves positively immediately after the experiential activity: 'Was a patient person' or 'Built self-worth'. The awareness, however, was reduced after one year. We discussed how to bring nature-based experiential activity into environmental education.
