Abstract

Studies have already indicated that a face-to-face dental health guidance provided by dental hygienists to non-medical university students improves their dental health awareness and makes them interested in their own oral cavity. However, there are very few reports regarding the effectiveness of non-face-to-face dental health guidance provided by dental hygienists through the use of electronic media. This study examined the effectiveness of dental health guidance that is informed through the use of electronic media. The purpose of this study was to clarify the awareness of dental health awareness of non-medical university students and examine the changes in their dental health as a result of non-face-to-face dental health guidance that uses electronic media. Furthermore, the study also clarified the effectiveness of the awareness guidance. The study targeted 75 students enrolled in non-medical universities who then received the dental health guidance through an electronic leaflet and completed a self-administered questionnaire with their names before and after the guidance.

The results indicated that the leaflet-based dental health guidance improved the participants’ dental health awareness. Furthermore, 94.1% of the participants stated that the leaflet was useful, 92.2% stated that they had read the leaflet and expressed their eagerness to continue to receive dental health guidance, indicating that the dental health guidance was effective using electronic media. It was suggested that dental hygienists should consider methods of providing dental health guidance tailored to each situation as they carry out their activities and should be more effective in disseminating dental information by using information-dissemination tools such as electronic media.
