Abstract

The present study investigated the hanzi/pinyin transcription and comprehension on 64 Japanese Mandarin Chinese leaners using 48 two-hanzi words. The results of a paired t-test and classification tree analysis indicated that while accuracies in comprehension based on hanzi words were the highest followed by Chinese-Japanese (non)cognates, the accuracies in transcription from hanzi to pinyin and the accuracies in comprehension based on pinyin words were the lowest. Accordingly, the results reveal that unlike hanzi orthographic knowledge, Japanese Mandarin Chinese learners at the primary level have difficulties acquiring pinyin knowledge. Consequently, this study demonstrates that there is a general problem concerning pinyin utilization in the curriculum of Mandarin Chinese as a liberal art.
