Description

In 2017, the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission (MTAC) was officially disbanded by the newly elected independent-leaning administration in Taiwan. At first glance, the existence of the MTAC on Taiwan in the 2000s was a strange curiosity. Established on Mainland China, the MTAC arrived on Taiwan in 1949. Under martial law and democratization, the ensuing institutional shifts within the MTAC provide a window onto the transition of official identity and statehood on Taiwan. However, it is vital to explore the context of the MTAC disbandment on democratic Taiwan, including investigation into the information available to the public about the MTAC and its activities in the years leading up to its closure in 2017. Specifically, how did popular discourses portray MTAC activities? Thus, to gain a stronger understanding of the MTAC in the public eye after the transition to democracy in Taiwan, this research note investigates the popular discourse(s) of the Commission during the last five years of its existence.
