Abstract

This article studies how Katsuo Takenaka understood Japanese Christianity concerning social work. According to Takenaka, in early and middle Meiji Japan which was progressing toward modernization, Christianity in Japan made a pioneering contribution to medical work, education, social improvement, and the introduction of socialism. However, due to the industrialization of Japanese society, social sciences and the public institution became the central part of the idea and the practice of social work, which made the role of Japanese Christianity limited as a co-operative and religious one. Therefore, the establishment of Major of Welfare Study at the School of Literature in Doshisha University must be a symbolic change.
