Actual Situation of Recognition about the Health Effects of New Tobacco, and Nicotine Dependence in Pregnant Women

Abstract

<p>Objective: This study clarifies the actual smoking status of pregnant after 28 weeks of gestation, their recognition of the health effects of new tobacco (Electronic cigarette and Heated tobacco products), KTSND and its relationships.<br>Method: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted with 154 pregnant women after 28 weeks of gestation, who underwent a pregnant women health check during the survey period, regarding their smoking status, recognition about the health effects of new tobacco, and KTSND.<br>Results: The recovery rate was 92.9% (142/154 pregnant women). Pregnant women’s smoking rate was 2.1%, the smoking rate at the time of pregnancy was 8.5%, and the cessation rate after pregnancy was 6.4%. The recognition was low; about 82 pregnant women (58.6%) thought that new tobacco was less harmful than cigarettes, and 48 pregnant women (34.3%) thought it had less effect on the fetus.<br>Discussion: About half of pregnant women have a correct recognition about the health effects of new tobacco. There are concerns about the increase in pregnant women who use new tobacco and the resulting effects on mother and child health.<br>Conclusion: It is necessary to disseminate the correct knowledge of new tobacco for pregnant women to support cessation from now on.</p>
