Higher plants have developed unique mechanisms to adapt to varying environmental conditions. Seed dormancy, which is increased during seed maturation, is a survival strategy in plants to avoid the seeds from germination under unfavorable environmental conditions. The control of seed dormancy is an important trait for crops, because reduced seed dormancy leads to pre-harvest sprouting during crop production. Abscisic acid (ABA) controls abiotic stress and developmental responses and is well known as an important signal molecule in the induction and maintenance of seed maturation and seed dormancy. DOG1 and Sdr4 were identified in Arabidopsis and rice, respectively, as major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for increased seed dormancy. Since DOG1 and Sdr4 encode different types of proteins with unknown biochemical functions, their role in seed dormancy remains elusive. In this review, we present our new findings on mechanisms of DOG1 mediated ABA signaling and summarize the latest research on seed dormancy, including Sdr4 mediated ABA responses.
