In "Secret Societies" (1847), Thomas De Quincey examines a variety of mysteries from recorded history. He is, however, not so much interested in disclosing or illuminating these mysteries, as he is in showing the ways in which mysteries are passed along to later generations. This same interest is maintained throughout his other essays such as "Historico-Critical Inquiry into the Origin of the Rosicrucians and Free-Masons" (1824), "Modern Superstition" (1840), and "The Essenes" (1840). Evoked consistently throughout these essays are, however, the modern people who, as social beings, continue to rely on the "mysteries" just as their ancestors did.
