Abstract

It is said that what's most important and beautiful about E.M. Forster's stories lies in the poetic moment of epiphany. The Other Side of the Hedge is a very short story and is not so well-known as The Road from Colonus and The Point of It, but it also has a vision of another, ideal world. In this short essay, I would like to try to answer the question why the brother in this short story has a scythe from the viewpoint of the quality Forster endowed the half brother with in The Longest Journey, Forster's autobiographical long novel.
