Effect of water droplet diameter and water content in emulsified fuel on the operation characteristics of diesel engine

説明

Diesel engines emit less carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons than spark ignition engines (Henein,1976), however there are some pollutants that particularly produced by diesel engines, such as Nitric Oxides (NOx) and soot, which are regarded as major problems. As countermeasures to this matter, some exhaust gas aftertreatment devices have been introduced, which is mainly modifications to the engine itself. In this research, modifications to the fuel have been focused, in which the usage of emulsified fuel is proposed. In this study, light oil is emulsified with water to produce water-in-oil (W/O) emulsified fuel. Water content and water droplet size are manipulated, in which the emulsified fuel with water content of 2~10 vol% with 2 vol% gaps and water droplet diameter of DS.M.D 16.6, 26.5 and 39.8 μm are used. Emulsified fuel with higher water content produces lower output power, but the thermal efficiency increases significantly while the production of NOx and soot decreases. The increment trend of thermal efficiency has been investigated by studying the ignition delay and heat release rate. Meanwhile, when the diameter of the water droplets is increased, output power and thermal efficiency increases, soot production slightly decreases, but the emission of NOx increases.
