Abstract

High-chromium steels such as 9Cr and 12Cr steels are currently used as boiler components, e.g. high-temperature steam piping and steam headers in fossil-fuel power plants. It was reported that cracks and creep damage have occurred in actual components in recent years. Therefore, an accurate assessment of the remaining life of high-chromium steels is important issue for electric power companies. In order to solve this issue it is useful to evaluate number density of precipitates. However, it should be noted that the use of area density of precipitates is inadequate in TEM observation in some cases. This study shows that volume density of precipitates in modified 9Cr-1Mo steel can be evaluated accurately by taking into account the specimen thickness. Furthermore, we studied relationship between the volume density of precipitates and creep strength of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel.
