Abstract

In this paper, after introducing the results of the present chronological study of pottery in Naniwa and Asuka regions of the 7th century, the author considered in detail the parallel relation of pottery excavated in each region, and assumed calendar era. As a result, it was able to clarify which region’s pottery was superior in terms of quality and quantity in each phase, and how the situation shifted. In Naniwa region, many good data of pottery have been obtained in the third quarter of the 7th century. The fact means the activities of people were prosperous in the region, and the development also extended to the outside of the palace area. On the other hand, in Asuka region there were few good data of pottery in the same period, and the region looks sluggish, different from the second quarter of the 7th century. On the contrary, pottery around the palace area in Naniwa region decreased sharply in the fourth quarter, and pottery in Asuka region rapidly increased. If the change of the region where the activities of people were the most brisk, namely the center of politics is shown by the transition of pottery in both areas, it will be an important clue for recognizing the different historical facts from the contents which were recorded in 'the Chronicles of Japan'.
