Description

In this paper, changes in suicide rates and disparities between prefectures are analyzed using data from suicide statistics in prewar Japan. The main results of the analysis are as follows. In the prewar period, the Gini coefficient for the suicide rate was larger than that for the death rate and infant mortality rate. In 1889, prefectures with higher urban population ratios tended to have higher total suicide rates. The decomposition results regarding the changes in the suicide rates from 1884 to 1891 show that the increase in suicide rates was attributed to the number of suicides in people over 50 years old and in their 20s. The decomposition results regarding the changes in the suicide rates from 1920 to 1936 show the change in the suicide rate by age, not the difference in the population composition ratio, contributed to the increase in the suicide rate. Furthermore, in this study it was found that the contribution of the suicide rate by age group differed by gender.
