  • Mythical Thought that Attempts to Reinstate the Animalistic Body and Senses : Study on Karino-jidai Authored by Tsushima Yuko

抄録

This paper discusses how Tsushima Yuko is seeking to recover the value of the object that has been denigrated in the modern world through her posthumous work, Karino-jidai, and examines her method of expression. In the process, this study focuses on an analysis of the mythical thoughts and representation of sensations underlying the text. Finally, this study attempts to understand the in-depth narrative of the text and reveal cultural representations, and to enrich the interpretation of this text, which has been discussed in a limited framework, even though it is a work with various meanings. In the work, heroine Emiko's older brother, Koichiro, is an intellectually disabled child, and his uncomfortable body and lack of good appearance are highlighted by the gaze of those around him. Although Koichiro, who has such an inferior body, was only an object of external sympathy and prejudice, Koichiro's unexpected physicality is discovered in the scene focalizing his sister Emiko. It is also said from the narrator in the work that Koichiro was exhibiting a more sensitive sense of smell than others. From this, the peculiar abilities and unique characteristics of his body, as a possessor of animalistic senses, can be discovered. In addition, various signs of 'smell' appear in several parts throughout the text, and reacting to these, the sensitive operati on of the subject's sense of smell is conspicuous. The activation of the sense of smell as an animalistic sense, starting with Koichiro and gradually reaching his sister and relatives seems to be, in this work, a phenomenon of the metaphorical transition of Koichiro's sensory characteristics intertwined with the fantasy in the text. As if linked to this, after Koichiro's death, the literary magic that Koichiro communicates with Emiko, negating the physical space, appears. Therewith, it is triggered by Emiko's mythic belief, and it creates the voice of Koichiro, who was an objectified being, and makes him subject in a virtual space. As it indicates the motive of mythical thought that operates in the depths of the text, in the middle of the text, a whale story from a long time ago is inserted in a form of Emiko's message. This praiseworthy tale that shows the mythical imagination of human-animal communion is read as a discourse against the exclusive and violent modern world. As such, the mythical thought underlying Karino-jidai shakes the mainstream discourse of modern times and tries to reinstate the body and sense of the other, who is regarded as inferior by the value standard centered on science and reason.
