Description

This article describes the historical development of the modern concepts of field and matter from the older idea of ether. It is outlined how the ether hypothesis had to be abandoned and how the field concept was introduced in its place. Here the discovery of the relativity theory played an important rôle, clarifying the essential difference between the field and ether concepts : the impossibility of determining the motion of a body relative to the field. The second important discovery was that of the quantum theory, which has made possible not only the unification of the wave and corpuscular theories of light, but also the establishment of wave theory of any kind of material particles. As a result of this discovery there can no longer be any distinction between light and material particles in that both are waves in the corresponding fields; the fields only are the ultimate objects of physics, matter being the excitation of waves in the field.
