Since the 1990s, India has experienced high economic growth rates, expansion of service industries, and higher levels of education among women. However, the labor force participation rate among women has continued to decline in rural areas and stagnate in urban areas. Using National Family Health Survey( NHFS) data, this paper examines how the employment of women relates to the education of herself and economic status such as the education of husbands, as well as family structure. It also sees how the changes in those factors have contributed to the changes in employment rate between 2006 and 2016. The following findings were obtained. First, the relationship between education and employment is U-shaped, but the relationship is at different stages in urban and rural areas. Second, the decline in the employment rate cannot be explained solely by changes in personal attributes such as the education level of the individual or her husband. Third, the percentage of women who are “daughters-in-law” has increased in both rural and urban areas and being a “daughter-in-law” of the household head was associated with non-employment, a trend that has become stronger in recent years.
