Abstract

Research Article

What is kyosei (coexistence)? We often present this concept as something that must be realized. While it is true that society is fraught with problems and that we should act and discourse to solve them, one can say that coexistence is always realized, as we are indeed living with others. This fact seems so obvious that it has not been questioned much; however, at a time when kyosei is subject to complex debate, we must pay attention to the fact that we are actually living together. This paper aims to examine a minimal coexistence—not an ideal symbiosis but rather a kyosei that is actually realized. Therefore, we consider Leibniz’s philosophy, from which we draw two kinds of symbiosis based on Deleuze’s interpretation of Leibniz in The Fold: Leibniz and Baroque. First, we review Leibniz’s monadology, which prevents individuals from engaging in direct communication, as suggested by the famous formula “monads have no windows.” Second, referring to Deleuze’s The Fold, we investigate the meaning of kyosei in a way that is faithful to Leibniz, who proposes a pre-established harmony by God. Third, we demonstrate what The Fold calls the “new Leibnizism,” which rejects God as a transcendent entity. Finally, based on this “new Leibnizianism,” we take a different approach in reflecting on kyosei.
