説明

As one of Japan’s preeminent tourist destinations, Kyoto is particularly known for sightseeing spots such as temples, shrines, and other well-maintained historical structures. For this reason, many tourists visit Kyoto every year. However, old buildings are often difficult to visit for the disabled, the elderly, and those with strollers. These visitors need to consider whether there are stairs or steps or slopes, if there are wheelchair-accessible restrooms or parking areas, or baby facilities, and whether there is enough explanation and signage about these things. All these considerations must be taken into account when visiting. If they do not need to worry about these things, the spots can be called“barrier-free.”This paper focuses on barrier-free measures for sightseeing at representative temples of Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera, and Nijo castle. It details various ways in which barrier-free access at these sites might be improved.
