カマツカの生長と繁殖に関する生態についての調査を,大和川では1996年4月から11月まで,佐備川では1995年11月から1996年11月までの期間おこなった。両河川において0歳魚から4歳魚までの5つの年齢群が採集された。本種の繁殖期は4月下旬から8月上旬で,多くの雌が5月から6月に産卵していることがそのGSIが他の月と比較して大きくなることから考えられた。本種の繁殖年齢は両河川に差はなく2歳魚以上で,標準体長が雄で約70mm以上,雌で約100mm以上の個体が繁殖に参加する。佐備川において,1歳魚と2歳魚で繁殖期に著しい生長がみられたが,3歳魚ではほとんど生長がみられなかった。このことから,本種は成熟していない個体は急激な生長をみせ,成熟魚はほとんど生長しないという可能性が示唆された。

Monthly sampling of the pike gudgeon, Pseudogobio esocinus esocinus was carried out from November 1995 to November 1996 in the Sabi River and from April 1996 to November 1996 in the Yamato River for the purpose of investigating life history, especially in growth and reproduction. The result of age-determination basing on scale-analysis shows that there are 5 year groups from 0-year group to 4 year-group. Breeding season was from late April to early August through observing ripe eggs and sperm by pressing abdomen. As the GSI of females were much higher in May and June than in than in other months, most females spawned in the two months. This species mature at 2 or 3 years of age when the standard body length reach approximately 70mm in males and 100mm in females. In the Sabi River rapid growth in length was observed from May to July in 1 and 2-year groups, not in 3 year-group. As a consequence of investigation,, immatured fish was rapid growth in length and matured fish a little.
