Abstract

As a countermeasure against heat-resistant spores, we installed a chlorine dioxide injector into the final tank of a tunnel washing machine to sterilize clothes that had been washed. A test cloth was soaked in a bacterial solution and washed, and the sterilizing effect was examined. The number of bacteria before washing was 3.27×108 cfu/ml, whereas the average number of bacteria after the injection of chlorine dioxide was 3.4×105 cfu/ml. Moreover, we installed a chlorine dioxide injection system in an operating cleaning factory and investigated its disinfection effect on actual washed cloths. We found that although a small amount of S. aureus and E. coli were detected in some washed cloths, there were no bacteria detected in most washed cloths. Furthermore, sodiumthiosulfate, a dechlorinating agent, was used along with chlorine dioxide injection, and a test operation was performed for one year. Results showed that the cloudiness and foaming observed in the activated sludge treatment process, which originates from chlorine compounds, were not observed in the present treatment owing to the addition of the dechlorinator, and the problem in waste water treatment was solved.
